This is one of several small Burrowing Owls that I was lucky enough to see for the first time today. I was able to photograph these beautiful little creatures beause a friend whom I will call "the owl whisperer" found them and shared there location with me. They are among the smallest owls at only about 10 inches tall and live in burrows in the ground or drainage pipes as is the case with these guys. I am still unclear wheather they are wintering here or if they are in the area year round. According to my research their range is from the Mississippi to the Pacific and from the Canadian prairie provinces into South America. They are also found in Florida. Unlike other owls, Burrowing owls are active during the day. A special thanks to my friend Robert Cohee!
